Amber is the fossilized resin of ancient pine trees. Warm to the touch and very light to wear, amber has been worn as jewellery for thousands of years. It comes in many colours, ranging from a very pale yellow, through orange, red, brown, black and green.
Because it comes from living material, it is called an "organic" gem. Like other organic gemstones, amber is delicate; it is very soft and is easily damaged. It can be melted by even low heat and some solvents will dissolve it.
Rings & Bracelets: For occasional wear only - amber is very easily scratched which will dull the surface.
Pendants & Brooches: Normally OK
Earrings & Necklaces: Take care that the amber is not in contact with perfume or hairspray which can easily damage the surface. RULE: Jewellery "on last and off first " to minimise the risk of accidently spraying with perfume or harispray.
